Secondary autoimmune hemolytic anemia is triggered by an underlying condition such as infection, cancer, medication reaction, or other disease that alters red blood cell surfaces or disrupts normal immune function. The clinical course of autoimmune hemolytic anemia can be dramatic and frightening for owners, with dogs becoming critically ill very rapidly.
