Potential complications of ulcerative dermatitis can develop if the condition is left untreated or inadequately managed. Secondary systemic infection (septicemia) is the most serious potential complication, occurring when bacteria from skin wounds enter the bloodstream. Deep tissue involvement may lead to osteomyelitis (bone infection) in severe cases, particularly with pododermatitis. Chronic non-healing wounds may develop, requiring prolonged treatment and potentially permanent management modifications. Permanent hair loss and scarring can affect appearance and may slightly increase susceptibility to future skin problems in affected areas. Behavioral changes resulting from chronic pain may persist even after wounds heal if pain management was inadequate during the illness.
