These tumors can originate from different cell types within the testes, including the germ cells that produce sperm, the Leydig cells that produce testosterone, and the Sertoli cells that support sperm development. Each tumor type exhibits distinct biological behavior and clinical presentation, though all share the common feature of abnormal cellular proliferation within testicular tissue. Testicular tumors represent one of the more treatable forms of internal neoplasia in guinea pigs when diagnosed before metastatic spread has occurred.
Testicular tumors are most commonly diagnosed in older intact male guinea pigs, typically those over three to four years of age, though they can occur in younger animals. The incidence in the guinea pig population is influenced by husbandry practices, as neutering eliminates the possibility of testicular tumor development. Among intact males, interstitial cell tumors arising from Leydig cells are considered relatively common, while seminomas and Sertoli cell tumors occur less frequently. The true prevalence of testicular tumors may be underestimated because early or small tumors can go undetected without careful examination.
The impact of testicular tumors on a guinea pig's health depends on tumor type, size, hormonal activity, and presence of metastatic spread. Many testicular tumors, particularly interstitial cell tumors, are benign and cause problems primarily through local effects such as testicular enlargement, discomfort, and mechanical interference with normal activities. Functional tumors that produce hormones can cause systemic effects including behavioral changes, hair loss, and feminization in cases of estrogen-producing tumors. Malignant tumors, while less common, can metastasize to regional lymph nodes, lungs, and other organs, significantly worsening prognosis.
Treatment for testicular tumors in guinea pigs is highly effective when the disease is localized, with surgical castration typically providing complete cure for benign tumors and early-stage malignancies. The prognosis following surgery for localized disease is generally excellent, with affected guinea pigs returning to normal quality of life after recovery. This favorable outlook makes early detection and prompt treatment particularly important. Regular examination of intact male guinea pigs by both caregivers and veterinarians facilitates early detection when treatment is most likely to be successful.
