This gram-negative bacterial infection primarily targets the gastrointestinal system but can rapidly become systemic, spreading throughout the body and affecting multiple organ systems including the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. Guinea pigs are particularly susceptible to salmonellosis due to their sensitive digestive systems and their nature as hindgut fermenters, which means any disruption to their gut flora can have devastating consequences.
Salmonellosis occurs sporadically in pet guinea pig populations but can cause devastating outbreaks in breeding facilities, pet stores, and rescue organizations where animals are housed in close proximity. The bacteria are shed in the feces of infected animals, contaminating the environment, food, and water sources. Transmission occurs through the fecal-oral route, meaning guinea pigs become infected by ingesting contaminated materials. Stress, overcrowding, poor sanitation, and nutritional deficiencies, particularly vitamin C deficiency, significantly increase susceptibility to infection and disease severity.
The impact of salmonellosis on guinea pig health can range from subclinical carrier states, where the animal shows no symptoms but actively sheds bacteria, to acute fatal septicemia that can kill an animal within 24 to 48 hours. Chronic carriers pose a particular challenge as they can continuously spread the infection to cage mates and other animals in the household while appearing perfectly healthy. The disease also causes significant welfare concerns due to the severe gastrointestinal symptoms, dehydration, and systemic illness that affected guinea pigs experience.
Early detection and aggressive treatment are absolutely critical for survival, though the prognosis for clinical salmonellosis in guinea pigs remains guarded even with appropriate veterinary intervention. The zoonotic nature of this disease, meaning it can spread from guinea pigs to humans, adds another layer of concern and necessitates strict hygiene protocols when caring for infected or potentially infected animals.
