This condition most commonly develops secondary to underlying heart disease, which is surprisingly prevalent in guinea pigs, particularly those over three to four years of age. When the heart cannot pump blood efficiently, pressure builds up in the blood vessels of the lungs, forcing fluid out of the vessels and into the surrounding lung tissue. However, pulmonary edema can also result from non-cardiac causes including severe respiratory infections, toxic exposures, heat stroke, allergic reactions, or overwhelming systemic illness. The impact of pulmonary edema on a guinea pig's health is immediate and severe. As fluid fills the air spaces meant for oxygen exchange, the guinea pig experiences increasingly desperate attempts to breathe. The oxygen deprivation affects every organ system, and the physical effort of trying to breathe exhausts the already compromised animal. Guinea pigs with pulmonary edema typically stop eating due to the respiratory distress, which rapidly triggers secondary gastrointestinal stasis. The combination of respiratory failure, cardiovascular compromise, and GI stasis creates a cascade of organ dysfunction that can prove fatal within hours.
Early recognition and emergency treatment are critical determinants of survival. While pulmonary edema can sometimes be managed successfully with diuretics to remove excess fluid, oxygen supplementation, and treatment of underlying causes, the prognosis depends heavily on how quickly treatment begins and the nature of the underlying condition. Guinea pigs hide illness effectively, so by the time respiratory distress becomes obvious, the condition may already be advanced. Owners who recognize the early warning signs and seek immediate veterinary care give their guinea pigs the best chance of survival.
