Prolapse in guinea pigs refers to the abnormal protrusion of an internal organ or tissue through a natural body opening, most commonly involving rectal, uterine, or vaginal tissues. This condition represents a true medical emergency regardless of which organ system is involved, as exposed internal tissues rapidly become damaged, infected, and necrotic when left outside the body. The appearance of any pink, red, or bloody tissue protruding from a guinea pig's body requires immediate veterinary attention, as delays in treatment dramatically worsen prognosis and can quickly result in death from shock, infection, or tissue death.
Prolapse conditions affect guinea pigs of all ages and both sexes, though the specific type varies with the individual's circumstances. Rectal prolapse, where a portion of the large intestine or rectum protrudes through the anus, can occur in any guinea pig and is often associated with chronic straining from diarrhea, parasites, or other conditions causing tenesmus. Uterine prolapse, where the uterus turns inside out and exits through the vagina, occurs in female guinea pigs during or after parturition and represents a catastrophic complication of labor. Vaginal prolapse, involving protrusion of vaginal tissue, also occurs in females and may be associated with hormonal influences from ovarian cysts or pregnancy.
The impact of prolapse on guinea pig health is severe and multifactorial. Exposed tissues quickly become edematous, traumatized, and contaminated with bedding material and bacteria. Blood supply to the prolapsed tissue may be compromised by swelling or by constriction at the body opening, leading to ischemia and tissue death. Shock develops from pain, fluid loss, and the systemic effects of tissue damage. If the prolapse involves intestinal tissue, the guinea pig cannot defecate normally, creating additional complications. Reproductive prolapses involve massive tissue volumes and significant hemorrhage risk. Without treatment, most guinea pigs with prolapse will die within hours to days from complications.
Despite the severity of prolapse as a medical emergency, prompt veterinary intervention can often save the guinea pig's life, particularly when treatment is sought immediately after the prolapse occurs. Treatment success depends heavily on the type of prolapse, how long the tissue has been exposed, the degree of tissue damage, and whether the prolapse can be successfully replaced. Rectal prolapses caught immediately may sometimes be manually reduced and retained with appropriate treatment of the underlying cause. Reproductive prolapses typically require surgical intervention including ovariohysterectomy. All prolapse cases require intensive supportive care and monitoring. The single most important factor in determining outcome is how quickly the guinea pig receives veterinary attention after the prolapse occurs.
