Related Conditions

Several conditions commonly co-occur with or predispose guinea pigs to prolapse. Parasitic infections, particularly pinworms, are frequently associated with rectal prolapse due to the straining they cause. Chronic diarrhea from any cause, including bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, or inflammatory bowel disease, increases rectal prolapse risk. Constipation leading to straining can precipitate rectal prolapse. Bladder stones causing urinary straining may contribute to pelvic floor weakness and prolapse. Ovarian cysts cause hormonal changes that can predispose to vaginal prolapse. Dystocia, or difficult labor, is the most common precursor to uterine prolapse. GI stasis may develop secondary to the stress and pain of prolapse.

Conditions presenting with similar symptoms to prolapse require differentiation during diagnosis. Intussusception, where one portion of intestine telescopes into another, may protrude through the anus and appear similar to rectal prolapse but requires different surgical management. Vaginal tumors or polyps could be mistaken for vaginal prolapse. Hemorrhoidal tissue, which does not occur in guinea pigs, might be considered in the differential for rectal prolapse by those unfamiliar with guinea pig anatomy. Penile prolapse in males, though rare, could be confused with rectal issues. Urethral prolapse in males presents as tissue protrusion from the urethral opening. Careful examination differentiates between these possibilities.

Potential complications arising from prolapse include immediate and long-term problems. Tissue necrosis occurs rapidly in prolapsed tissue and may require surgical resection. Infection of exposed tissues can lead to sepsis and systemic illness. Hemorrhage is common with reproductive prolapses. Recurrence of prolapse following treatment is a significant concern, particularly with rectal prolapse. Fecal or urinary incontinence may result from severe rectal prolapse or from surgical complications. Adhesions following abdominal surgery for reproductive prolapse can cause ongoing problems. Chronic pain and discomfort may affect quality of life. GI stasis commonly develops secondary to the stress, pain, and decreased appetite associated with prolapse and its treatment.
