Pasteurellosis is a significant bacterial infection in guinea pigs caused primarily by Pasteurella multocida, a gram-negative bacterium that can affect multiple organ systems throughout the body. This opportunistic pathogen is one of the more common bacterial agents responsible for respiratory disease in cavies, though it can also cause infections in the middle ear, sinuses, joints, and reproductive tract. The bacteria can exist as part of the normal flora in some guinea pigs without causing disease, but stress, immunosuppression, or concurrent illness can trigger active infection and clinical disease.
Pasteurellosis occurs with moderate frequency in guinea pig populations, particularly in environments where multiple animals are housed together or where there is exposure to rabbits, which commonly carry Pasteurella species. The infection spreads through direct contact with infected animals, contaminated respiratory secretions, or fomites such as shared food bowls, water bottles, and bedding materials. Young guinea pigs, elderly animals, and those with compromised immune systems are at greatest risk for developing symptomatic disease following exposure to the pathogen.
The impact of pasteurellosis on guinea pig health can range from mild upper respiratory symptoms to severe, life-threatening systemic infection. When the infection remains localized to the upper respiratory tract, affected guinea pigs may experience nasal discharge, sneezing, and mild respiratory difficulty. However, if the bacteria spread to the lungs, middle ear, or other organs, the consequences become significantly more serious and can include pneumonia, torticollis, septicemia, and death. The stress response in guinea pigs, combined with their tendency to hide illness as prey animals, means that infections are often more advanced by the time clinical signs become apparent to caregivers.
Pasteurellosis is treatable when diagnosed early and managed with appropriate guinea pig-safe antibiotics, supportive care, and environmental modifications. Early detection is crucial for successful outcomes, as advanced infections become increasingly difficult to resolve and may cause permanent damage to affected organs. Regular health monitoring, prompt veterinary attention at the first sign of respiratory symptoms, and maintenance of a clean, low-stress environment are essential components of managing this infectious disease in guinea pig populations.
