Myiasis, commonly known as fly strike or flystrike, is a devastating parasitic condition that occurs when flies lay eggs on a guinea pig's body and the resulting larvae, or maggots, begin feeding on the animal's living tissue. This condition represents one of the most serious medical emergencies affecting guinea pigs, capable of causing death within hours if left untreated. The condition most commonly affects guinea pigs during warm weather months when fly populations are active, though it can occur year-round in heated indoor environments or warmer climates where flies remain present.
Fly strike occurs when certain fly species, primarily blowflies, greenbottles, and bluebottles, are attracted to guinea pigs by the scent of urine, feces, wounds, or any moist, soiled areas on the body. Female flies deposit eggs in these areas, and the eggs hatch rapidly, sometimes within hours, into larvae that immediately begin consuming the guinea pig's flesh. The condition is particularly insidious because the initial stages may occur in areas hidden from view, such as beneath the hindquarters, in skin folds, or under matted fur, meaning significant damage may occur before the problem is discovered. Guinea pigs housed outdoors are at highest risk, but indoor guinea pigs are not immune if flies gain access to their living area.
The impact of myiasis on a guinea pig's health is catastrophic and rapidly progressive. Maggots release enzymes that break down and liquefy tissue as they feed, creating progressively larger wounds and destroying healthy flesh. The toxic compounds produced by maggots are absorbed into the guinea pig's bloodstream, causing systemic poisoning, shock, and organ failure. The pain and distress experienced by affected guinea pigs is extreme, and the combination of tissue destruction, blood loss, fluid loss, toxemia, and shock creates a life-threatening cascade that rapidly overwhelms the animal's ability to survive. Secondary bacterial infections invariably accompany myiasis, compounding the damage.
Despite its severity, myiasis is treatable if caught very early and addressed with immediate, aggressive veterinary intervention. Treatment involves complete removal of all larvae, thorough wound cleaning and debridement, intensive supportive care including fluids and pain management, and antibiotic therapy to address secondary infections. However, the prognosis depends heavily on how quickly treatment is initiated, the extent of tissue damage, and the overall health of the guinea pig before the attack. Prevention is far preferable to treatment, and understanding the risk factors and implementing protective measures is essential for any guinea pig owner. This is truly a condition where every minute counts.
