Mycobacteriosis, commonly referred to as tuberculosis in guinea pigs, is a serious and rare bacterial infection caused by various species of Mycobacterium, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis, and Mycobacterium avium complex. This chronic, progressive disease affects multiple organ systems in guinea pigs and represents one of the most challenging infectious conditions to diagnose and treat in cavy medicine. The infection typically targets the respiratory system, lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and can disseminate throughout the body, causing widespread granulomatous inflammation that severely compromises organ function.
While mycobacteriosis is considered rare in modern domestic guinea pig populations due to improved husbandry practices and reduced exposure to infected cattle and poultry, cases still occur sporadically, particularly in regions where tuberculosis remains endemic in livestock or wildlife populations. Guinea pigs are highly susceptible to mycobacterial infections and were historically used as laboratory models for tuberculosis research precisely because of their sensitivity to these organisms. The disease can be transmitted through inhalation of contaminated aerosols, ingestion of contaminated food or water, or direct contact with infected animals or their secretions.
The impact of mycobacteriosis on guinea pig health is profound and typically devastating. Infected cavies experience progressive weight loss, chronic respiratory distress, enlarged lymph nodes, and generalized debilitation that significantly reduces quality of life. Because guinea pigs are prey animals that instinctively hide signs of illness, the disease often progresses substantially before clinical signs become apparent to caregivers. By the time symptoms are noticeable, the infection has frequently spread to multiple organs, making successful treatment extremely difficult.
Treatment of mycobacteriosis in guinea pigs is controversial and often considered impractical due to the prolonged therapy required, the zoonotic potential of the disease, and the generally poor prognosis. Many veterinarians recommend euthanasia upon confirmed diagnosis to prevent animal suffering and eliminate the risk of transmission to humans and other animals. Early detection through regular veterinary examinations and maintaining strict biosecurity measures represent the most effective approaches to managing this serious disease in guinea pig populations.
