LCM holds particular significance beyond its effects on guinea pigs because it is a zoonotic disease, meaning infected guinea pigs can transmit the virus to humans, where it causes similar meningitis and encephalitis syndromes that can be serious, particularly in immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women.
Lymphocytic choriomeningitis occurs sporadically in guinea pig populations, with infection rates varying based on housing conditions and exposure to wild mice or contaminated materials. Guinea pigs housed in facilities with wild mouse access face the highest risk, as mice are the natural reservoir host that maintains the virus in the environment. Commercial breeding facilities, pet stores, and home environments can all potentially harbor infected mice or contaminated materials. The virus can persist in contaminated bedding, food, and environmental surfaces, creating exposure opportunities even when direct mouse contact does not occur. Outbreaks have been traced to pet stores and breeding facilities, sometimes resulting in human cases among handlers and new pet owners.
