As renal function becomes compromised, affected animals experience accumulation of metabolic wastes in the blood, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, and secondary effects on multiple organ systems. These systemic effects manifest as progressive weight loss, decreased appetite, increased thirst and urination initially followed by decreased urine production as disease advances, weakness, and general decline. The quality of life deterioration can be gradual at first but typically accelerates as renal failure progresses.
Treatment options for kidney tumors in guinea pigs are limited compared to those available for larger companion animals. Surgical removal of the affected kidney (nephrectomy) may be considered in rare cases where tumor is confined to one kidney and the remaining kidney is healthy, but this surgery carries significant risks in guinea pigs. Chemotherapy and radiation protocols are not well-established for this species. Most treatment approaches focus on palliative care, managing symptoms of renal insufficiency, maintaining hydration and nutrition, and supporting quality of life. Early detection offers the best opportunity for meaningful supportive intervention.
