Ketosis most commonly affects pregnant guinea pigs during the final two to three weeks of gestation when fetal energy demands are highest, earning it the alternative name pregnancy toxemia. However, this metabolic crisis can also develop in non-pregnant guinea pigs under conditions of severe stress, prolonged fasting, or obesity combined with inadequate food intake. Obese guinea pigs are particularly vulnerable because their larger fat stores can produce overwhelming quantities of ketones when mobilized, and their fatty livers may be less capable of processing these metabolites safely. The condition can progress from apparent health to death within 24-48 hours, making recognition of early warning signs essential.
The impact of ketosis on affected guinea pigs is devastating and systemic. Ketone bodies alter blood pH, causing metabolic acidosis that impairs cellular function throughout the body.
