Pale mucous membranes, particularly noticeable in the gums and inner ear pinnae, provide visible evidence of anemia. Without treatment, severe anemia can become life-threatening as tissues fail to receive adequate oxygen for survival.
Diagnosis requires veterinary evaluation including blood work to confirm reduced red blood cell counts and hemoglobin levels. Treatment involves identifying and addressing the underlying cause, whether dietary insufficiency, blood loss, or absorption problems, while providing iron supplementation to rebuild depleted stores. With appropriate treatment, many guinea pigs recover well from iron deficiency anemia, though recovery time depends on severity and how effectively the underlying cause is controlled.
