Potential complications of intussusception include both immediate consequences of the obstruction and long-term sequelae following surgical correction. Intestinal necrosis develops rapidly once blood supply to the trapped segment is compromised, with perforation and peritonitis as potential consequences. Septicemia may result from bacterial translocation across damaged intestinal walls. Short bowel syndrome can occur following extensive intestinal resection, affecting long-term nutrient absorption. Adhesion formation following abdominal surgery may predispose to future obstruction. Anastomotic complications including dehiscence or stricture can cause acute or chronic postoperative problems. Recurrent intussusception is possible if underlying triggering conditions are not addressed.
