The parasites invade liver cells and biliary epithelium, causing inflammation, tissue destruction, and impaired liver function that can range from subclinical to life-threatening depending on the parasite burden and the guinea pig's immune status.
Hepatic coccidiosis occurs sporadically in guinea pig populations, with higher incidence in young animals, those from overcrowded or unsanitary conditions, and newly acquired guinea pigs experiencing stress-induced immunosuppression. Pet store guinea pigs and those from breeding facilities with suboptimal hygiene may carry coccidia asymptomatically and develop clinical disease when stressed. The condition is more commonly diagnosed in regions and facilities where coccidiosis is endemic in the guinea pig population, though it can occur anywhere guinea pigs are kept.
The impact of hepatic coccidiosis on guinea pig health can be substantial, particularly when diagnosis and treatment are delayed. Liver damage from parasitic invasion impairs the organ's numerous metabolic functions, including protein synthesis, detoxification, and bile production. Affected guinea pigs may experience digestive disturbances, weight loss, and progressive weakness. Severe infections can lead to hepatic failure, secondary bacterial infections, and death. Young guinea pigs and those with compromised immune systems are at greatest risk for severe disease outcomes.
With prompt diagnosis and appropriate antiparasitic treatment, many guinea pigs with hepatic coccidiosis can recover fully, particularly if treatment begins before extensive liver damage has occurred. However, the challenge lies in early detection, as guinea pigs instinctively hide signs of illness until they are significantly compromised. By the time obvious symptoms appear, the parasite may have already caused substantial hepatic injury. This makes preventive measures and vigilant monitoring of at-risk guinea pigs essential for minimizing the impact of this condition.
