While galactostasis itself is not immediately life-threatening, it causes significant discomfort to the affected sow and can progress to more serious conditions if not addressed appropriately.
Galactostasis occurs with moderate frequency in guinea pig sows, particularly in certain situations that create an imbalance between milk production and milk removal. The condition most commonly develops when a sow loses some or all of her pups shortly after birth, when pups are weaned abruptly rather than gradually, when litters are smaller than the sow's milk production capacity, or when pups are unable to nurse effectively due to illness or weakness. First-time mothers may be more prone to galactostasis as their milk production adjusts to actual demand.
The impact of galactostasis on a guinea pig's health depends on severity and duration. Mild cases cause localized discomfort and may resolve spontaneously as milk production decreases to match demand. More severe engorgement is painful and can interfere with the sow's ability to move comfortably, eat normally, and care for any surviving pups. If retained milk becomes infected, the condition progresses to mastitis, which is a more serious infection requiring antibiotic treatment and potentially causing systemic illness.

Simple interventions including warm compresses, gentle massage, and encouraging nursing or expressing milk can resolve many cases.
