Several species of mites can infest guinea pig fur, with Chirodiscoides caviae being the most frequently encountered fur mite specific to guinea pigs. These microscopic parasites live on the surface of the skin and attach to hair shafts, where they feed on skin debris, sebaceous secretions, and tissue fluids without burrowing into the deeper skin layers. Mildly affected guinea pigs may show only subtle increases in scratching and minor coat changes that owners might not immediately recognize as parasitic disease. More significantly affected individuals develop persistent itching that interferes with normal activities, progressive coat deterioration with visible hair loss, and skin changes including scaling, redness, and secondary infection from scratching damage. Importantly, guinea pigs are prey animals that instinctively hide signs of illness and discomfort, meaning that by the time symptoms become obvious to owners, the infestation may have been causing suffering for an extended period.
Treatment of fur mite infestations is highly effective with appropriate antiparasitic medications, and the prognosis for complete recovery is excellent when treatment is implemented correctly. Several medications proven safe for guinea pigs reliably eliminate fur mites when administered at proper doses under veterinary guidance. However, successful treatment requires more than simply medicating the affected guinea pig; all guinea pigs in a household must receive treatment simultaneously to eliminate asymptomatic carriers, and thorough environmental cleaning removes mites and eggs that would otherwise cause rapid reinfestation. With comprehensive treatment addressing the infested animals and their environment, fur mite infestations resolve completely and do not cause lasting health effects.
