Secondary bacterial infection of damaged tissue is common and can progress to serious infection or sepsis if not properly treated. Gangrene may develop in severely damaged tissue. Chronic pain in affected areas may persist after healing. Loss of toes or foot portions affects mobility and may require adaptation. Scar tissue formation may cause ongoing stiffness or sensitivity. Emotional and behavioral effects of the traumatic experience and painful recovery period may persist. Re-exposure to cold is especially dangerous, as previously damaged tissue may be more susceptible to repeat injury. Prevention of all future cold exposure is essential following any frostbite incident.
