Pain from cracked foot pads can cause the guinea pig to reduce movement and eating, leading to gastrointestinal stasis, which is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in guinea pigs. Chronic foot discomfort may contribute to stress, which negatively affects immune function and overall health. Altered gait from avoiding painful foot pressure can potentially lead to secondary musculoskeletal issues over time. Neglected cases with massive keratin buildup may experience permanent changes in foot structure.
