Hypothermia frequently accompanies near-drowning in guinea pigs due to the combination of wet fur, evaporative cooling, and shock-related circulatory changes. Symptoms of hypothermia include cold ears and feet, lethargy, weakness, slow or shallow breathing, and in severe cases, unconsciousness. Hypothermia requires gradual, careful warming to prevent cardiac complications that can occur with rapid temperature changes. Brain damage from hypoxia can manifest as seizures, disorientation, abnormal gait, head tilt, circling, blindness, or changes in behavior and cognition. These neurological complications may be permanent or may improve over time depending on the severity of oxygen deprivation. Heat stroke, though caused by opposite environmental conditions, shares some physiological mechanisms with near-drowning including organ damage from circulatory compromise and may require similar emergency supportive care approaches.
