Dehydration is perhaps the most immediate and dangerous accompanying condition, developing rapidly as fluid losses through the intestinal tract exceed intake. Electrolyte imbalances involving sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate can affect cardiac function, muscle activity, and cellular processes. Malnutrition develops when chronic diarrhea prevents adequate nutrient absorption and when decreased appetite further reduces intake. Vitamin C deficiency can both predispose to diarrhea and result from it, as intestinal inflammation impairs absorption of this essential nutrient. GI stasis, while seemingly opposite to diarrhea, can develop when illness reduces food intake enough to slow gut motility dangerously.
