However, congenital infection (occurring before birth) and infection in immunocompromised individuals can produce severe disease affecting multiple organ systems. The salivary glands serve as the primary site of viral persistence and replication, but active infection can involve the lungs, liver, spleen, and other tissues. In pregnant guinea pigs, the virus can cross the placenta and cause fetal infection with potentially devastating consequences including death, growth retardation, and developmental abnormalities.
Treatment for GPCMV infection is limited to supportive care, as no antiviral medications approved for guinea pig use effectively eliminate the virus. The lifelong nature of herpesvirus infections means that once infected, guinea pigs remain carriers indefinitely. Prevention focuses on protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly pregnant guinea pigs and those with compromised immune systems, from exposure.
