Severe anemia from inadequate erythropoietin can cause weakness and further compromise quality of life. Mineral imbalances, particularly elevated phosphorus and altered calcium, contribute to bone disease and soft tissue calcification. Secondary infections become more likely as immune function is compromised. Gastrointestinal stasis may occur secondary to reduced appetite and overall illness, representing a serious complication in guinea pigs.
