This condition is most frequently caused by Streptococcus zooepidemicus or Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus, though other bacteria including Streptobacillus moniliformis and Staphylococcus species can occasionally be responsible. The affected lymph nodes become sites of bacterial colonization and immune response, often progressing to abscess formation with thick, caseous purulent material.
Cervical lymphadenitis occurs with notable frequency in guinea pig populations, particularly in animals housed in groups where minor wounds from social interactions provide entry points for bacteria. The condition is often referred to colloquially as lumps by guinea pig owners due to its characteristic clinical presentation. Bacteria typically gain entry through breaks in the skin or oral mucosa, including bite wounds from cagemates, abrasions from rough bedding or cage materials, and oral injuries from sharp hay stems or dental problems. Once bacteria enter the tissues, they drain to regional lymph nodes where they establish infection.
The impact of cervical lymphadenitis on guinea pig health extends beyond the visible swelling. Enlarging abscesses can cause discomfort, interfere with eating and swallowing if located near the throat, and may press on important anatomical structures including blood vessels and the airway. Affected guinea pigs often experience decreased appetite due to pain and difficulty eating, leading to weight loss and potential gastrointestinal complications. In severe cases, bacteria may spread from localized abscesses to cause systemic infection or seed additional body sites. The caseous nature of guinea pig abscesses makes complete resolution challenging, as the thick material does not drain easily.
Treatment of cervical lymphadenitis typically requires both surgical intervention and antibiotic therapy for successful resolution. Unlike the liquid pus found in many other species, guinea pig abscesses contain thick, cottage cheese-like material that must be physically removed rather than simply drained. Early detection and treatment significantly improve outcomes and reduce the risk of complications. With appropriate surgical management and sustained antibiotic therapy, most guinea pigs recover well, though recurrence is possible if the infection is not completely eliminated. Regular health monitoring and prompt attention to any lumps or swellings helps ensure the best possible outcomes.
