The impact of cataracts on a guinea pig's quality of life depends on the severity and rate of progression. Early cataracts may cause no noticeable vision impairment, and affected guinea pigs behave entirely normally. As cataracts progress to moderate stages, vision becomes increasingly blurred, though many guinea pigs compensate well using their other senses. Mature cataracts that completely opacify the lens cause blindness in the affected eye. Guinea pigs with bilateral cataracts may become functionally blind, though many adapt remarkably well to this condition. Beyond vision loss, cataracts can lead to complications including lens-induced uveitis (inflammation triggered by lens proteins leaking from the cataract) and secondary glaucoma, which can cause pain and further eye damage.
The treatability of cataracts in guinea pigs involves both direct treatment of the cataract and management of associated complications. Surgical cataract removal, while technically possible, is not commonly performed in guinea pigs due to practical limitations including the small eye size, cost, and limited availability of specialized surgical equipment and expertise. Most guinea pigs with cataracts are managed without surgery, with monitoring for complications and support for adaptation to reduced vision. Medical treatment addresses secondary complications such as uveitis when they develop. Many guinea pigs with cataracts, even those with significant vision loss, enjoy good quality of life with appropriate care and environmental accommodations.
