Bladder stones are one of the most common serious urinary tract conditions affecting guinea pigs, with a higher prevalence than in many other small mammals. The condition occurs across all ages but is more frequently diagnosed in middle-aged to older guinea pigs, likely reflecting the time required for significant stone development. Both male and female guinea pigs are affected, though the consequences of stones differ due to anatomical variations. Bladder stones in guinea pigs typically require surgical removal, as the calcium-based stones affecting this species do not dissolve with dietary changes or medical treatment. While surgery carries inherent risks, it provides definitive treatment when performed by an experienced exotic veterinarian. Following stone removal, preventing recurrence through dietary management becomes the primary focus. Early detection improves outcomes, but guinea pigs' tendency to hide illness means that stones are often discovered only when symptoms become obvious.
