Complications of bacterial pneumonia can extend the disease process and worsen prognosis. Septicemia occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream and spread infection throughout the body, representing a life-threatening development requiring intensive treatment. Lung abscesses may form when pockets of infection become walled off within lung tissue, sometimes requiring prolonged antibiotic courses or surgical drainage. Chronic respiratory disease can develop if lung damage is extensive, leaving the guinea pig with permanent respiratory compromise and increased susceptibility to future infections. Gastrointestinal stasis may develop secondary to the stress of illness or as a complication of antibiotic therapy, requiring concurrent management. Pericarditis, inflammation around the heart, can occur if infection extends to cardiac structures.
