Muscle atrophy occurs from disuse of painful limbs and compounds mobility problems. Vitamin C deficiency may coexist, particularly in guinea pigs whose reduced mobility limits access to food or whose pain decreases appetite. Dental problems may develop secondary to reduced food consumption or difficulty reaching food appropriately.

Severe mobility impairment leads to soiling of the coat if the guinea pig cannot move away from waste. Depression from chronic pain may affect overall well-being and appetite. Secondary joint involvement may develop as abnormal gait compensates for initially affected joints.
