Potential complications of von Willebrand disease relate primarily to the consequences of bleeding episodes. Severe blood loss can result in life-threatening anemia requiring transfusion. Internal bleeding into body cavities, joints, or around vital organs can cause serious damage. Repeated bleeding episodes with transfusions can lead to transfusion reaction development in some cats. Chronic blood loss can cause iron deficiency anemia over time. Delayed wound healing may occur if bleeding interferes with normal tissue repair. Monitoring for these complications allows for early intervention and appropriate management when bleeding episodes do occur.
