Tritrichomonosis is a protozoal infection of the feline large intestine caused by Tritrichomonas foetus, a single-celled flagellated organism that colonizes the colon and causes chronic diarrhea. This parasite was first recognized as a feline pathogen in the early 2000s and has since been identified worldwide as an important cause of large bowel diarrhea, particularly in young cats. The infection is highly prevalent in multi-cat environments including catteries, breeding colonies, and shelters, where direct fecal-oral transmission occurs readily between cats sharing living spaces and litter boxes.
Tritrichomonas foetus colonizes the mucosal surface of the large intestine, where it adheres to and damages the intestinal lining without penetrating deeply into tissues. The organism exists only in a trophozoite form, lacking the cyst stage that allows many parasites to survive in the environment. This means transmission requires relatively fresh fecal material and close contact between cats. Despite this limitation, the parasite spreads efficiently in dense cat populations due to shared litter box use and grooming behaviors. Infected cats may shed organisms intermittently, sometimes testing negative on single examinations despite ongoing infection.
The clinical impact of tritrichomonosis is primarily characterized by chronic large bowel diarrhea that can persist for months to years if untreated. Affected cats typically remain otherwise healthy, maintaining good appetite and body condition despite ongoing gastrointestinal symptoms. The diarrhea often has characteristic features including semi-formed to cow-pie consistency, increased mucus, and sometimes fresh blood. Fecal urgency and accidents outside the litter box are common. While rarely life-threatening, the chronic nature of symptoms significantly affects quality of life for affected cats and their owners.
Treatment for tritrichomonosis involves specific antiprotozoal medication, as many common treatments for other intestinal parasites are ineffective against Tritrichomonas foetus. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment generally result in resolution of diarrhea, though some cats may experience spontaneous resolution without treatment over months to years. Veterinary diagnosis is essential because the clinical presentation overlaps with many other causes of feline diarrhea, and specific testing is required to identify this particular organism. Understanding this condition helps cat owners and breeders implement appropriate management and prevention strategies.
