Testicular tumors are abnormal growths that develop within the testes of intact male cats. While relatively uncommon in the feline species compared to dogs and some other mammals, these tumors do occur and represent an important health concern for unneutered male cats. The testes are the male reproductive organs responsible for sperm production and testosterone secretion, and tumors arising from these structures can affect both reproductive function and overall hormonal balance. Because the vast majority of pet cats are neutered early in life, testicular tumors are primarily encountered in breeding cats, strays, and those whose owners have chosen not to pursue neutering.
Testicular tumors in cats arise from the various cell types present within the testes. The three main types of testicular tumors recognized in cats are Sertoli cell tumors, seminomas, and interstitial (Leydig) cell tumors, each originating from different cellular components of testicular tissue. The underlying causes of testicular tumor development are not fully understood, but age and cryptorchidism (undescended testicles) are recognized risk factors. Hormonal influences, genetic predisposition, and environmental factors may also contribute to tumor development, though specific causative agents have not been definitively identified in cats.
The impact of testicular tumors on a cat's health varies depending on the tumor type, size, and whether the tumor produces hormones or has metastasized to other body regions. Some testicular tumors are hormonally active and can cause feminization in male cats due to excess estrogen production, leading to changes in behavior, coat quality, and physical characteristics. Other tumors may remain localized without hormonal effects until they grow large enough to cause physical discomfort or are discovered incidentally. In rare cases, testicular tumors in cats can metastasize to lymph nodes, lungs, or other organs, significantly worsening prognosis.
The good news for cats diagnosed with testicular tumors is that treatment is often highly effective, particularly when detected early. Surgical castration (removal of both testes) is typically curative for benign tumors and localized malignant tumors. Early detection through regular veterinary examinations and owner awareness of testicular abnormalities leads to the best outcomes. Cats that undergo complete surgical removal of localized testicular tumors generally have excellent prognoses and can live normal lifespans. Prevention is achieved through neutering, which eliminates the possibility of testicular tumor development entirely.
