The underlying cause of spinal tumors involves the uncontrolled proliferation of cells that would normally be regulated by the body's growth control mechanisms. Tumors affecting the feline spine may arise from various cell types, including the cells of the spinal cord itself, the meninges surrounding the cord, the bones of the vertebral column, nerve roots, or supporting tissues. Lymphoma is the most common spinal tumor type in cats, often occurring as part of a more widespread cancer affecting the lymphatic system. Other tumor types seen in cats include osteosarcoma of the vertebrae, meningioma, nerve sheath tumors, and various others, each with its own characteristics and prognosis.
The impact of spinal tumors on affected cats is typically progressive and can ultimately be devastating without treatment. As tumors grow, they compress the spinal cord and nerve roots, causing increasing neurological deficits that often begin subtly and worsen over weeks to months. Pain may be a prominent feature, causing behavioral changes and reduced quality of life. The specific pattern of symptoms depends on the tumor's location along the spine and whether it primarily affects the spinal cord, nerve roots, or bony structures. Left untreated, most spinal tumors will eventually cause paralysis and may lead to death from the cancer itself or secondary complications.
Treatability of spinal tumors in cats varies considerably depending on the tumor type, location, extent, and the cat's overall health status. Some tumors, particularly certain lymphomas, respond remarkably well to chemotherapy and may achieve remission. Others may be amenable to surgical removal or radiation therapy, offering either cure or significant palliation. Unfortunately, some tumors are not treatable due to their location, invasiveness, or the cat's inability to tolerate aggressive therapy. Early diagnosis provides the best opportunity for treatment, making veterinary evaluation of any progressive neurological symptoms essential for cats of any age but particularly for those in middle age and beyond.
