Sarcocystosis is a parasitic disease caused by protozoan organisms of the genus Sarcocystis, which have complex life cycles involving both intermediate and definitive hosts. Cats serve as definitive hosts for several Sarcocystis species, meaning the parasites complete their sexual reproduction in the feline intestinal tract. These species include Sarcocystis hirsuta and Sarcocystis gigantea, which use cattle and sheep as intermediate hosts respectively, as well as other species associated with various prey animals. The infection is acquired when cats consume raw or undercooked meat containing Sarcocystis tissue cysts, making hunting cats and those fed raw diets most commonly affected.
The parasite's life cycle in cats begins when tissue cysts containing bradyzoites are ingested and release organisms in the intestinal tract. These parasites undergo sexual reproduction in the cells lining the small intestine, producing sporocysts that are shed in the feces. Unlike many parasites, Sarcocystis sporocysts are immediately infectious when passed, posing potential risk to intermediate hosts that ingest contaminated material. However, cats do not become intermediate hosts for these Sarcocystis species and do not develop tissue cysts in their muscles from typical dietary exposure.
The impact of sarcocystosis on cat health is generally mild compared to many other parasitic diseases. Most infected cats remain asymptomatic or develop only transient, mild gastrointestinal signs. The parasites cause minimal intestinal damage during their reproductive phase, and healthy cats typically resolve infection without requiring treatment. However, heavy infections or repeated exposure may cause more noticeable symptoms including diarrhea, decreased appetite, and mild weight loss. Immunocompromised cats may experience more severe or prolonged illness.
Treatment for clinically affected cats involves antiprotozoal medications that interrupt the parasite's reproductive cycle. Supportive care including fluid therapy and nutritional support may be needed for cats with significant gastrointestinal symptoms. The prognosis for sarcocystosis in cats is generally excellent, with most cats recovering completely with or without specific treatment. Prevention focuses on dietary management to avoid raw meat consumption, though this may be impractical for hunting cats. Veterinary consultation helps ensure appropriate diagnosis and management when symptoms occur.
