Roundworms, also known as ascarids, are the most common intestinal parasites found in cats worldwide, with two primary species affecting felines: Toxocara cati and Toxascaris leonina. These large nematodes inhabit the small intestine where they feed on partially digested food, competing directly with their host for nutrients and potentially causing significant gastrointestinal disturbance. Roundworm infection, known as ascariasis, is particularly prevalent in kittens, with studies showing that the majority of young cats are infected at some point during their first year of life. Adult cats also frequently harbor roundworms, though they often develop some degree of natural resistance that limits worm burdens.
Cats acquire roundworm infections through several distinct routes depending on the species involved. Toxocara cati has a particularly concerning transmission cycle because it can pass from mother cats to their kittens through the milk during nursing, meaning kittens can become infected within the first weeks of life before they ever encounter environmental contamination. Both roundworm species can infect cats through ingestion of embryonated eggs from contaminated environments, and through consumption of paratenic hosts such as rodents, birds, and insects that carry encysted larvae. This multiple-route transmission pattern contributes to the extremely high prevalence of roundworms in cat populations.
The impact of roundworm infection ranges from subclinical parasitism in healthy adult cats with low worm burdens to life-threatening disease in heavily infected kittens. Large numbers of intestinal worms compete for nutrients, causing malnutrition, poor growth, and the characteristic pot-bellied appearance seen in parasitized kittens. Heavy infections can cause intestinal obstruction or intussusception, particularly in young cats with narrow intestinal lumens. Beyond the effects on cats, roundworms represent a zoonotic concern because Toxocara cati larvae can infect humans, particularly children, causing conditions known as visceral larva migrans and ocular larva migrans when larvae migrate through tissues and organs.
Treatment of roundworm infection is straightforward and highly effective with commonly available antiparasitic medications. Multiple deworming protocols are recommended for kittens given their high likelihood of infection and the potential for transmammary transmission, while adult cats benefit from regular deworming based on their lifestyle and risk factors. The excellent efficacy of available dewormers and the importance of protecting both feline and human health make roundworm prevention and treatment a fundamental component of responsible cat ownership and veterinary care. Early and consistent deworming protocols can protect kittens from the detrimental effects of heavy parasitism and reduce environmental contamination that puts other animals and humans at risk.
