When lung tissue is damaged, the normal repair process sometimes goes awry, resulting in excessive deposition of collagen and other fibrous materials in the lung interstitium, the supportive tissue framework of the lungs. This fibrotic tissue is stiff and non-functional, unable to participate in gas exchange. In many feline cases, the exact trigger for this abnormal fibrotic response cannot be identified, leading to a diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Known causes include chronic infections, inhaled toxins, and certain inflammatory conditions, though many cases occur without an identifiable preceding cause.
The impact of pulmonary fibrosis on affected cats is significant and progressive. As more lung tissue is replaced by scar tissue, the cat's breathing becomes increasingly labored. Exercise intolerance develops early, with affected cats becoming winded after minimal activity. Oxygen levels in the blood decline, leading to fatigue, reduced activity, and eventually respiratory distress. The condition substantially affects quality of life, particularly in its later stages. Because cats are adept at hiding illness and naturally tend to be inactive, early stages of pulmonary fibrosis may go unnoticed until the disease has progressed significantly.
While pulmonary fibrosis cannot be cured or reversed, management strategies can help slow progression and maintain quality of life for affected cats. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, providing respiratory support, and managing symptoms. Early detection allows for earlier intervention, which may help preserve remaining lung function for longer. Cat owners should be aware of the subtle signs of respiratory disease, particularly in older cats, and seek veterinary evaluation for any persistent breathing changes.
