Patellar luxation is a condition in which the patella, commonly known as the kneecap, moves out of its normal position within the trochlear groove of the femur. This displacement can occur toward the inside of the leg, called medial luxation, or toward the outside, called lateral luxation, with medial luxation being more common in cats. The patella normally glides smoothly within a groove at the front of the knee joint during flexion and extension, but in cats with patellar luxation, abnormalities in the bone structure, soft tissues, or both allow the kneecap to slip out of position. This orthopedic condition ranges from mild cases that cause occasional skipping gaits to severe cases resulting in persistent lameness and joint damage.
Patellar luxation in cats typically develops due to congenital or developmental abnormalities in the structure of the knee joint and surrounding tissues. Cats are often born with subtle anatomical variations that predispose them to patellar luxation, including a shallow trochlear groove, abnormal positioning of the tibial tuberosity where the patellar ligament attaches, or abnormal angulation of the limb bones. These structural variations may be present from birth or may become apparent as the kitten grows and the skeletal system matures. Less commonly, traumatic injury can cause patellar luxation in cats with otherwise normal anatomy.
The impact of patellar luxation on a cat's quality of life depends significantly on the severity of the condition. Cats with mild luxation may experience only occasional symptoms and maintain relatively normal activity levels, while those with severe luxation may develop significant lameness, muscle wasting, and progressive joint damage. Over time, the repeated displacement and replacement of the patella causes wear on the joint surfaces and stretching of the supporting structures, potentially leading to osteoarthritis and chronic pain. Early recognition and appropriate management are essential to minimize these long-term consequences and maintain mobility.
Patellar luxation is a treatable condition, with treatment options ranging from conservative management for mild cases to surgical correction for more severe presentations. The prognosis for cats with patellar luxation is generally good, particularly when the condition is identified early and appropriate treatment is provided. Surgical techniques have become well-established and typically produce excellent outcomes in restoring normal joint function. Veterinary evaluation is essential for accurate diagnosis, grading of severity, and determination of the most appropriate treatment approach for each individual cat.
