Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor in cats, arising from the cells responsible for bone formation and representing a significant malignancy affecting the feline skeletal system. This aggressive cancer can develop in virtually any bone in the body but most commonly affects the long bones of the limbs, particularly the hind legs, as well as the skull and facial bones. Unlike osteosarcoma in dogs, which is notorious for its high metastatic rate and aggressive behavior, feline osteosarcoma tends to behave somewhat less aggressively, with lower rates of metastasis at the time of diagnosis and better overall prognosis following treatment. The condition typically affects middle-aged to older cats, with an average age at diagnosis around ten years, though cats of any age can be affected.
The exact causes of osteosarcoma in cats remain incompletely understood, though several factors have been associated with tumor development. The cancer develops when bone-forming cells called osteoblasts undergo malignant transformation and begin proliferating uncontrollably. Previous bone trauma, fractures, or bone infections may predispose to osteosarcoma development at the affected site, suggesting that bone repair processes may sometimes go awry and lead to cancer. Radiation exposure has been linked to osteosarcoma development in areas that have received radiation therapy for other conditions. Additionally, some cases have been associated with previous metallic implants used for fracture repair. However, the majority of feline osteosarcoma cases arise without any identifiable predisposing cause.
Osteosarcoma significantly affects the quality of life of affected cats through pain, lameness, and progressive loss of normal function. Bone pain is often the first symptom owners notice, manifesting as reluctance to bear weight on an affected limb, decreased activity, or changes in behavior. As the tumor grows, it destroys normal bone architecture and can cause pathological fractures, where the weakened bone breaks during normal activity. Tumors affecting the skull or jaw may interfere with eating, breathing, or vision depending on their specific location. The pain and dysfunction caused by osteosarcoma make timely diagnosis and treatment essential for maintaining quality of life.
Treatment for feline osteosarcoma typically involves surgical removal of the affected bone, which for limb tumors usually means amputation of the affected leg. The good news is that cats adapt remarkably well to life on three legs, often returning to normal activity levels within weeks of surgery. Because metastasis rates are lower in cats than in dogs with osteosarcoma, many cats achieve extended survival times or even cure with surgery alone. Chemotherapy may be recommended in some cases, particularly for high-grade tumors or when metastasis is suspected. Early detection and prompt treatment offer the best outcomes, making it essential for owners to seek veterinary evaluation of any persistent lameness, swelling, or bone pain.
