Bacteria present in the mouth and on the skin can be inoculated deep into tissues during biting or scratching injuries, eventually reaching bone if wounds are severe or left untreated. Less commonly, infections may spread to bone through the bloodstream from distant infection sites, a process known as hematogenous spread.
The impact of osteomyelitis on a cat's health extends beyond localized bone damage to affect overall wellbeing and quality of life. Affected cats typically experience significant pain at the infection site, leading to lameness, reluctance to move, and behavioral changes reflecting their discomfort. Systemic signs of infection, including fever, lethargy, and decreased appetite, may accompany the localized symptoms. If left untreated, osteomyelitis can lead to extensive bone destruction, pathological fractures, and spread of infection to surrounding soft tissues or throughout the body.
