The metaphysis is the flared portion of bone located between the growth plate and the shaft, and it is particularly active during skeletal development. This condition causes inflammation and disruption of normal bone formation in these regions, resulting in pain, swelling, and lameness in affected young cats. While well-recognized in dogs, particularly large and giant breeds, metaphyseal osteopathy occurs only sporadically in feline patients.
The exact cause of metaphyseal osteopathy in cats has not been definitively established. Various factors have been implicated in the canine version of this disease, including viral infections, vaccination reactions, nutritional imbalances, and genetic predisposition. In cats, the rarity of the condition has limited research into specific causative factors. The condition appears to involve disturbance of the normal endochondral ossification process, where cartilage at the growth plate is converted to bone. This disruption leads to areas of abnormal mineralization and inflammation within the metaphysis.
The impact of metaphyseal osteopathy on affected cats is significant, causing considerable pain and affecting mobility during the critical growth period. Young cats with this condition typically present with painful swelling of the limbs, reluctance to walk or play, and episodes of fever. The condition may follow a cyclical pattern with periods of acute symptoms followed by relative improvement. Multiple limbs are usually affected, and episodes may recur over weeks to months until skeletal maturity is approached. The pain and systemic illness substantially diminish quality of life during active disease phases.
Metaphyseal osteopathy is generally self-limiting, meaning it typically resolves as the cat reaches skeletal maturity and growth plate activity decreases. Treatment focuses on managing pain and supporting the cat through active disease episodes. Anti-inflammatory medications and analgesics form the cornerstone of therapy. Nutritional assessment ensures the diet is balanced and supports healthy bone development. With appropriate supportive care, most cats can recover fully once the growth period ends. Early veterinary diagnosis is important both to confirm the condition and to rule out other causes of bone pain in young cats that might require different treatment approaches.
