Lymphoma, also known as lymphosarcoma (LSA), is the most common cancer diagnosed in cats, accounting for approximately thirty percent of all feline malignancies. This cancer arises from lymphocytes, which are white blood cells that play a crucial role in the immune system. Lymphoma can develop virtually anywhere in the body where lymphatic tissue is present, which includes lymph nodes throughout the body, the gastrointestinal tract, chest cavity, kidneys, nasal passages, central nervous system, and skin. The widespread distribution of lymphatic tissue explains why lymphoma can present in so many different anatomical forms, each with its own characteristic clinical signs, treatment approach, and prognosis.
The development of lymphoma involves malignant transformation of lymphocytes, causing them to proliferate uncontrollably and accumulate in tissues. The specific trigger for this transformation varies. Historically, feline leukemia virus infection was responsible for a large proportion of feline lymphoma cases, but widespread testing and vaccination have reduced FeLV-associated lymphoma. Today, the majority of lymphoma cases in cats occur in FeLV-negative individuals, and the exact cause is often unknown. The gastrointestinal form, known as alimentary lymphoma, has become the most common presentation in recent decades, particularly in older cats. Research suggests that chronic intestinal inflammation may predispose to this form of lymphoma.
Lymphoma significantly impacts the health and quality of life of affected cats. The clinical effects depend on which organs are involved and the extent of disease. Alimentary lymphoma causes gastrointestinal symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. Mediastinal lymphoma in the chest causes respiratory distress due to masses and fluid accumulation. Multicentric lymphoma causes widespread lymph node enlargement. Renal lymphoma affects kidney function, while nasal lymphoma causes breathing difficulty and facial changes. Regardless of location, advanced lymphoma impairs immune function and causes systemic effects including weight loss, lethargy, and poor appetite.
Despite being a serious diagnosis, lymphoma is one of the most treatable cancers in cats. Chemotherapy is the primary treatment modality and can induce remission in a significant proportion of cases. Unlike in humans, cats typically tolerate chemotherapy well, with manageable side effects that rarely affect quality of life significantly. The prognosis varies greatly depending on the anatomical form, the grade of the lymphoma, FeLV status, and response to treatment. Some cats achieve remission periods of a year or more with good quality of life, while others have more resistant disease. Veterinary oncologists work with primary care veterinarians and owners to develop individualized treatment plans that balance efficacy with quality of life considerations.
