Lung carcinoma, also known as pulmonary adenocarcinoma, is a malignant cancer that originates in the lung tissue of cats. This serious respiratory tumor represents the most common type of primary lung cancer in felines, arising from the epithelial cells lining the airways or lung tissue. While relatively uncommon compared to metastatic lung tumors that spread from other body sites, primary lung carcinoma occurs with enough frequency to be an important consideration when evaluating cats with respiratory symptoms. The condition predominantly affects older cats, typically those twelve years of age or older, though it can occasionally develop in younger animals.
Primary lung carcinoma develops when normal lung cells undergo malignant transformation, leading to uncontrolled cellular proliferation and tumor formation. The cancer typically originates in a single lung lobe before potentially spreading to other lobes, regional lymph nodes, or distant organs. Adenocarcinoma, meaning cancer arising from glandular tissue, represents the most common histological subtype, though other forms including squamous cell carcinoma and bronchial carcinoma can occur. The precise triggers initiating this malignant transformation remain unclear, though environmental factors including secondhand smoke exposure and potentially other inhaled carcinogens may play contributing roles.
The impact of lung carcinoma on affected cats ranges from minimal early symptoms to severe respiratory compromise as the disease progresses. Early tumors may cause no noticeable clinical signs, with the cancer discovered incidentally during imaging for other purposes. As tumors enlarge, they increasingly interfere with normal respiratory function, causing coughing, breathing difficulties, and exercise intolerance. Advanced disease may cause pleural effusion, the accumulation of fluid around the lungs that further compromises breathing. The cancer's potential to metastasize to distant sites including bones and digits can cause additional complications including lameness.
Treatment options exist for cats diagnosed with lung carcinoma, particularly when the disease is detected before extensive spread has occurred. Surgical removal of affected lung lobes represents the primary treatment approach and offers the best opportunity for extended survival in appropriate candidates. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes, making prompt veterinary evaluation of any respiratory symptoms essential. While lung carcinoma remains a serious diagnosis with guarded prognosis overall, some cats experience meaningful survival times following appropriate treatment, maintaining good quality of life for months to over a year following surgery.
