This wingless, flattened insect is a biting or chewing louse that feeds on skin debris, hair, and sebaceous secretions rather than blood, making it distinct from blood-sucking lice that affect some other animal species. While lice infestations were once relatively common in cats, improved parasite control practices and widespread use of effective antiparasitic medications have made this condition less frequently encountered in well-cared-for pets, though it remains prevalent among stray, feral, and shelter cat populations.
Felicola subrostratus is a highly host-specific parasite, meaning it can only survive and reproduce on cats. This important characteristic means that cat lice cannot be transmitted to humans, dogs, or other household pets, and conversely, lice from humans or dogs cannot infest cats. The entire life cycle of the cat louse occurs on the host animal, with eggs called nits glued firmly to hair shafts, where they hatch and develop through nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. This complete on-host life cycle makes lice entirely dependent on their feline hosts and relatively easy to eliminate with appropriate treatment.
The impact of lice infestations on affected cats ranges from mild irritation to significant discomfort and health consequences, depending on the severity of the infestation and the overall health status of the cat. Heavy infestations cause persistent itching, scratching, and restlessness that can substantially diminish a cat's quality of life. The constant irritation and grooming associated with lice can lead to hair loss, skin damage, and secondary bacterial infections. In debilitated, young, or elderly cats, severe infestations can contribute to anemia, weight loss, and generalized poor condition, particularly when lice populations are allowed to grow unchecked.
