Jaw fractures in cats are traumatic injuries involving breaks in the bones that form the upper jaw (maxilla), lower jaw (mandible), or both. These injuries are relatively common in feline emergency medicine, often occurring as a result of vehicular trauma, falls from heights, animal attacks, or other high-impact accidents. The feline jaw is comprised of multiple bones joined at various sutures and the midline symphysis, and fractures can occur at any location along these structures. The severity of jaw fractures ranges from simple, minimally displaced breaks to complex, comminuted fractures with significant tissue damage and concurrent injuries.
Jaw fractures typically result from sudden, forceful trauma that exceeds the structural integrity of the facial bones. Motor vehicle accidents represent one of the most common causes, particularly for outdoor cats. Falls from heights, known as high-rise syndrome, frequently cause jaw fractures when cats land on their faces despite their typical ability to right themselves. Cat fights and attacks by other animals can cause bite wounds that lead to or accompany jaw fractures. Less commonly, severe dental disease or bone tumors may weaken the jaw, predisposing it to pathologic fracture with minimal trauma. Understanding the mechanism of injury helps guide assessment for concurrent injuries commonly associated with each type of trauma.
The impact of a jaw fracture on an affected cat is substantial, affecting the fundamental abilities to eat, drink, groom, and breathe comfortably. Misalignment of the jaws prevents normal occlusion, making grasping and chewing food difficult or impossible. Pain associated with the fracture causes reluctance to use the mouth normally. Swelling and instability may compromise the airway in severe cases. The open nature of jaw fractures, with potential communication between the fracture site and the oral cavity, increases infection risk. Beyond the immediate injury, delayed or inadequate treatment can result in permanent malocclusion, chronic pain, and feeding difficulties.
Treatment of feline jaw fractures has advanced significantly, with modern techniques offering excellent outcomes for most cases when appropriate care is provided promptly. Stabilization of fracture fragments allows bone healing while restoring normal jaw alignment and function. Various fixation methods are available, selected based on fracture type, location, and patient factors. Most cats with properly repaired jaw fractures return to normal eating and activity within weeks to months. Early veterinary intervention, ideally within hours of injury, improves outcomes by preventing complications and allowing optimal fracture repair. Cat owners should recognize that jaw fractures are survivable injuries with generally good prognoses when appropriate veterinary care is obtained quickly.
