Hypothyroidism is an endocrine disorder characterized by insufficient production of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland. Unlike dogs where hypothyroidism is relatively common, this condition is exceedingly rare in cats when it occurs naturally. The thyroid gland, located in the neck, produces hormones that regulate virtually every metabolic process in the body, making adequate thyroid function essential for overall health. When thyroid hormone levels fall below normal, cats experience a widespread slowdown in metabolic functions that can affect multiple organ systems.
The most common cause of hypothyroidism in cats is iatrogenic, meaning it results from medical treatment rather than occurring spontaneously. Cats who undergo treatment for hyperthyroidism, whether through radioactive iodine therapy, surgical thyroidectomy, or long-term anti-thyroid medication, may develop hypothyroidism as a consequence of over-correction. Naturally occurring or congenital hypothyroidism in cats is extremely rare and has only been documented in a small number of case reports in veterinary literature.
When hypothyroidism does occur in cats, it significantly impacts their quality of life and overall health. The condition causes a general slowing of metabolic processes, leading to lethargy, weight gain, and various other systemic effects. Cats with hypothyroidism may appear mentally dull, experience skin and coat changes, and develop intolerance to cold temperatures. The severity of symptoms often correlates with how deficient the thyroid hormone levels become.
The good news is that hypothyroidism in cats is highly treatable once properly diagnosed. Thyroid hormone replacement therapy can effectively restore normal metabolic function and resolve clinical signs. However, accurate diagnosis is essential because the symptoms of hypothyroidism can mimic other conditions. Early detection and appropriate treatment allow most cats with hypothyroidism to enjoy a good quality of life with proper ongoing management and regular veterinary monitoring.
