Giardiasis is a common intestinal parasitic infection caused by the single-celled protozoan organism Giardia duodenalis, also known as Giardia intestinalis or Giardia lamblia. This microscopic parasite colonizes the small intestine of cats and other mammals, interfering with normal nutrient absorption and causing gastrointestinal symptoms that can range from mild, self-limiting illness to chronic, debilitating disease. Giardia is one of the most prevalent intestinal parasites affecting cats worldwide, with infection rates particularly high in young kittens, cats living in group housing situations, and those from shelter or cattery environments where the parasite can spread readily among animals.
Transmission of Giardia occurs through the fecal-oral route when cats ingest environmentally resistant cysts shed in the feces of infected animals. These cysts can survive for extended periods in cool, moist environments and are resistant to many common disinfectants, making environmental contamination a significant challenge in controlling the spread of infection. Cats become infected by drinking contaminated water, grooming contaminated fur, ingesting contaminated food, or direct contact with infected feces. Once ingested, the cysts transform into active trophozoites that attach to the intestinal lining and begin reproducing, completing the infection cycle and eventually producing new cysts that pass in feces to continue transmission.
The impact of giardiasis on feline health varies considerably depending on the cat's age, immune status, and overall health. Many infected cats remain asymptomatic, shedding cysts and serving as sources of environmental contamination without displaying obvious illness. Cats that do develop clinical disease typically experience soft, poorly formed, or watery stools, which may contain excess mucus or appear pale and fatty due to malabsorption. Weight loss, failure to thrive, and poor coat condition can develop in cats with chronic or severe infections. While giardiasis is rarely life-threatening in otherwise healthy cats, the diarrhea and malabsorption it causes can significantly impact quality of life and, in vulnerable individuals like young kittens, can contribute to more serious health consequences including dehydration and nutritional deficiencies.
Giardiasis is generally treatable with appropriate antiparasitic medications, and most cats recover fully with proper therapy. However, treatment can be complicated by the parasite's ability to survive in the environment and reinfect cats during or after treatment, making environmental decontamination an essential component of management. The zoonotic potential of Giardia raises concerns for households with immunocompromised individuals, though the strains commonly infecting cats appear to have limited transmissibility to humans compared to other assemblages. Early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment addressing both the infected cat and environmental contamination offer the best outcomes for eliminating infection and preventing ongoing transmission within households or catteries.
