Inflammatory bowel disease frequently involves the stomach along with the intestines, and cats diagnosed with IBD often have concurrent gastritis. Pancreatitis commonly occurs alongside gastritis and can be difficult to distinguish clinically since both cause vomiting and appetite loss. Cholangitis, or inflammation of the bile ducts, often occurs in a triad with pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel disease, creating complex multi-organ inflammation. Food allergies may cause both gastritis and intestinal inflammation simultaneously. Cats with chronic kidney disease or liver disease often develop secondary gastritis due to toxin accumulation and altered metabolism.

Conditions with similar symptoms to gastritis must be distinguished through appropriate diagnostic testing. Gastric ulcers represent more severe gastric pathology with similar but often more intense symptoms including blood in vomit. Intestinal parasites can cause vomiting and gastrointestinal upset that mimics gastritis. Foreign body ingestion may present identically to acute gastritis until imaging reveals the obstruction. Pancreatitis causes vomiting and abdominal pain but involves a different organ. Gastrointestinal lymphoma and other cancers can cause chronic vomiting similar to chronic gastritis. Hyperthyroidism in older cats causes vomiting along with other systemic symptoms. Accurate differentiation ensures cats receive appropriate treatment for their specific condition.

Potential complications of gastritis can develop when the condition is severe or left untreated. Gastric ulcers may form when chronic inflammation damages the mucosal lining deeply enough to create open sores. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances result from persistent vomiting and reduced intake. Nutritional deficiencies develop when cats cannot eat adequately for extended periods. Aspiration pneumonia can occur if severe vomiting leads to inhalation of stomach contents. Esophagitis may develop from repeated exposure to stomach acid during vomiting. Weight loss and muscle wasting affect cats with prolonged gastritis. Recognizing and addressing complications early prevents them from becoming serious threats to the cat's health and recovery.
