Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is an extremely common viral infection affecting cats worldwide, particularly those living in multi-cat environments. This enveloped RNA virus primarily infects the intestinal tract, where it replicates in the cells lining the gut. The vast majority of cats infected with feline coronavirus experience only mild gastrointestinal symptoms or no clinical signs at all, making this one of the most common yet least recognized infections in cats. Prevalence rates in multi-cat households and catteries can exceed eighty percent, while even single-cat households show infection rates of approximately twenty-five to forty percent.
Feline coronavirus is transmitted primarily through the fecal-oral route, with cats becoming infected by ingesting viral particles shed in the feces of infected cats. Shared litter boxes are the main source of transmission, as cats can ingest virus particles during normal grooming of their paws after litter box use. The virus can survive in the environment for several weeks under suitable conditions, particularly in dried fecal material. Close contact between cats facilitates spread, which explains the high prevalence in shelters, breeding catteries, and multi-cat households. Kittens typically become infected between five and twelve weeks of age as maternal antibody protection wanes.
In most cats, feline coronavirus infection causes mild, transient intestinal illness or no symptoms whatsoever. Affected cats may experience brief episodes of mild diarrhea, soft stool, or occasional vomiting, but these signs often go unnoticed or are attributed to dietary indiscretion. Many cats clear the infection completely, while others become persistent shedders, continuously excreting virus in their feces and serving as infection sources for other cats. The primary significance of feline coronavirus lies in its relationship to feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a devastating disease that develops when FCoV mutates within an individual cat to become the highly pathogenic FIP virus.
Understanding feline coronavirus infection is important for cat owners, particularly those with multiple cats, because of its relationship to FIP. While only a small percentage of FCoV-infected cats, estimated at five to ten percent, develop FIP, the consequences of mutation are severe. Veterinary awareness of FCoV infection status can inform management decisions in multi-cat environments. There is no vaccine currently available that effectively prevents FCoV infection, making environmental management and hygiene practices the primary tools for reducing viral load and transmission. For the vast majority of cats, however, FCoV infection remains a benign condition that does not significantly impact health or quality of life.
