Feline asthma, also known as allergic bronchitis or feline bronchial disease, is a chronic inflammatory condition of the lower airways that affects an estimated one to five percent of all domestic cats. This condition is characterized by recurring episodes of airway inflammation and constriction that lead to breathing difficulties, coughing, and wheezing. When a sensitized cat inhales allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, cigarette smoke, or household chemicals, the immune system mounts an exaggerated response. This reaction causes the smooth muscles surrounding the airways to constrict while the airway lining becomes swollen and produces excess mucus. The result is narrowed airways that make breathing difficult, particularly during exhalation. Over time, chronic inflammation can lead to permanent airway changes including thickening of the airway walls and increased mucus production.
The impact of feline asthma on a cat's health and quality of life ranges from mild and easily managed to severe and life-threatening. Cats with mild asthma may experience occasional coughing episodes that minimally affect daily life, while those with severe disease can suffer frequent, debilitating attacks that significantly limit activity and can progress to respiratory crisis. During acute asthma attacks, cats may experience severe respiratory distress as their airways become dramatically narrowed, limiting oxygen intake and potentially leading to cyanosis and collapse. The chronic nature of the condition means that affected cats require ongoing management and environmental modifications to minimize exposure to triggers and control inflammation.
Feline asthma is a manageable condition with appropriate veterinary care and owner commitment, though it cannot be cured. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preventing irreversible airway damage and maintaining good quality of life. Treatment typically involves a combination of environmental management to reduce allergen exposure and medical therapy to control inflammation and relieve airway constriction. With proper management, most asthmatic cats can lead relatively normal, comfortable lives. However, neglecting treatment or failing to control environmental triggers can result in progressive airway damage, increased frequency and severity of attacks, and potentially fatal respiratory crisis.
