While this condition is well-documented in certain dog breeds, particularly West Highland White Terriers and Scottish Terriers, it occurs only sporadically in feline patients. The condition typically manifests in young growing cats, usually between three and eight months of age, and is characterized by the formation of new, irregular bone growth on the bones of the head and jaw.
The exact cause of craniomandibular osteopathy in cats remains poorly understood, though a genetic component is strongly suspected based on patterns observed in canine cases. The abnormal bone growth appears to result from disrupted normal bone remodeling processes during the growth phase. Unlike some bone conditions that affect the entire skeleton, craniomandibular osteopathy specifically targets the bones of the cranium and mandible, leading to its distinctive clinical presentation.
Craniomandibular osteopathy significantly impacts affected cats by causing pain, difficulty opening the mouth, problems with eating, and in severe cases, complete inability to eat normally. The bony proliferation can interfere with jaw movement and may affect the temporomandibular joint function.
