Several conditions can produce skin lesions that resemble contact dermatitis and must be differentiated for appropriate treatment. Other forms of allergic dermatitis may produce lesions in similar locations, although the distribution pattern of contact dermatitis, corresponding to areas of direct contact, is distinctive. Bacterial or fungal skin infections can cause localized skin changes and may occur secondarily to contact dermatitis or as primary conditions. Eosinophilic granuloma complex, which is relatively common in cats, can produce lesions on the chin, lips, and other areas sometimes affected by contact dermatitis. Autoimmune skin diseases may produce localized lesions requiring differentiation. Solar dermatitis affects sparsely haired areas and may be confused with contact reactions in sun-exposed cats.

Complications of contact dermatitis are generally preventable with appropriate treatment but may occur if the condition is not addressed promptly. Secondary bacterial infection is the most common complication, developing when the skin barrier is compromised by inflammation and self-trauma. Yeast overgrowth may also occur in damaged skin. Self-trauma from scratching and licking can lead to significant skin damage, hair loss, and potentially chronic skin changes if the behavior continues. Chronic, uncontrolled contact dermatitis may lead to permanent changes in skin texture or pigmentation in affected areas. Recognizing and treating contact dermatitis promptly, and eliminating the causative agent, prevents these complications and allows for complete recovery in most cases.
